New knowledge of the consequences of obesity in children and adolescents

More than one child in every class at school suffers from obesity, with an increased risk of type 2 diabetes, stroke and cardiovascular disease in adulthood.

“The project, which is supported by the Vissing Foundation, aims to investigate the extent of early cardiovascular disease in Danish children with obesity. In addition, we will investigate whether the signs of disease disappear after weight loss,” explains Morten Asp Vonsild Lund, physician and PhD student at the Department of Biomedical Science, Copenhagen University & the Children’s Obesity Clinic, Holbæk.

The children are examined on the day they begin treatment at the Children’s Obesity Clinic, Department of Pediatrics, Copenhagen University Hospital Holbæk, and again a year later.

The project is being conducted in collaboration between Holbæk Hospital, the Rigshospital and the University of Copenhagen, and will contribute new knowledge, which may be vital to future prevention and treatment.

The project addresses an acute problem, since today, cardiovascular disease is the cause of two thirds of all deaths related to overweight.
