Used batteries store electricity

Gridturn is a start-up company that reuses used electric vehicle batteries to store electricity.
The batteries are taken from electric vehicles and built into a cabinet, where they can store electricity, e.g. from solar panels, for later use in business and industry.

“With reused batteries instead of new ones in a 100 kWh battery system, you can save 45 tons of CO2 and 30,000 litres of water from mining operations,” says Louise Witt Sengeløv, founder and CEO at Gridturn.

She continues: “Our solution enables companies to save on electricity bills, and it helps to put more green electricity into our sockets. At the same time, this solution can reduce the need to expand the power grid as people buy more and more electric vehicles, so all electricity consumers will benefit.”

In the project supported by the Vissing Foundation, Gridturn’s solution will be tested by a pilot customer with solar panels on the roof, to prepare the system for the market.

“We will gather essential knowledge, which we need in order to put a solution on the market in 2026, which we hope will give batteries from electric vehicles a second life. It will contribute to energy storage in Danish industry. We consider our solution to be a step in the green revolution, because it solves a waste problem and supplies a need for energy storage at the same time,” says Louise Witt Sengeløv.
