Support for a good Christmas

The Relatives’ Network – Abuse Portal is a nationwide organisation of social volunteers. Since 2013 it has supported individuals and families affected by abuse of alcohol, drugs or medications.

Christmas can be a difficult time for children in families where both financial difficulties and abuse are part of daily life. The Relatives’ Network – Abuse Portal helps the most vulnerable families to plan a secure and happy Christmas.

“In 2025 the aim is to reach out to 280 families with children across the country. Each family will receive a gift voucher for DKK 1,000 for food and presents, so the children can enjoy Christmas in the same way as others of their age,” says Sylvia N. Meyer, Chairman of the Board of the Relatives’ network – Abuse Portal.

At the same time, the parents receive a special Christmas card, which tactfully draws attention to the possibility of a free course of interviews in the new year. Experience has shown that help at Christmas does not only bring happiness ‘here and now’, but can pave the way to more permanent support and a new start.

The project is operated by the management of the association working together with volunteers, who are responsible for wrapping gifts, distribution and contact with the families.

“The grant from the Vissing Foundation makes it possible to reach far more families that we have funds for otherwise. In practical terms, it means even more children can have a secure and happy Christmas with food on the table and presents under the tree – and that their parents learn at the same time about our free courses of interviews in the new year. That way, the help extends beyond Christmas, and can be the first step towards more stable daily life,” says Silvia N. Meyer.
