MARGINALISED CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE

Strengthening deaf children’s language

Tegnsprogspakken PLUS (“The Sign Language Package PLUS”) is a project to support deaf children and children with hearing loss with early language learning, and to give their parents specific tools to maintain comfortable communications at home. Many parents of deaf children do not know sign language themselves, and are therefore in a difficult position, where it can be a challenge to support their child’s language and social development. The project is intended to make the transition easier and help families feel secure.

Tegnsprogspakken.dk is a digital platform presenting short, practical videos with guidance, along with facts, advice and inspiration. The material is presented clearly, in easily accessible language, without barriers of technical terms, so all parents can understand, whatever their level of sign language or previous background.

With the PLUS extension, the Danish Deaf Association can reach out to even more families and offer extra content showing how they can communicate with their child in everyday situations. This helps parents to feel better equipped, and at the same time improves the child’s chances of developing a rich, varied language from an early age.

In this way the project helps to create opportunities for deaf children and their families and to promote knowledge of sign language across the country.
