“Special Moments is a Blue Cross scheme for young people who for various reasons need a break from a tough daily life. They come, for example, from families with alcohol or drug abuse, poverty, mental illness or other social problems.
The idea with Special Moments is that these young people can find friendship, fellowship and closeness with other children and young people and adult volunteers. Special Moments operate locally, maintaining relationships and building bridges to create continuity for children and young people facing difficulties.
“We organise activities and outings where these children and young people are seen and appreciated, so that they build up confidence in others, with enthusiasm for life, and are able to dream of a better future,” says Lise Søndergård Thomsen from Blue Cross Denmark.
The activities depend on the individual team, and may include anything from baking dampers over a bonfire to visiting an adventure park. In every six months, a minimum of three one-day activities are held at weekends.
Special Moments are planned and set up by local volunteer coordinators and a team of volunteer leaders, who ensure that the children have positive experiences and meet committed adults, and also form friendships between participants, and good relationships with the adults.
“In 2024, 300 children and young people made friends and had positive experiences through Special Moments. We depend entirely on the Vissing Foundation’s support of our work,” says Lise Søndergård Thomsen.
