QVersion is developing a small, robust sensor which can detect methane leaks from biogas plants, using light to determine whether there is methane in the air. A specific property of methane is that it absorbs a particular form of light. When the gas is present, slightly less light remains, and the sensor is able to detect this, even when leaks are very small.
The sensor is designed to use a minimum of current, to withstand the demanding conditions of a biogas plant, and to be inexpensive when produced in large numbers. The goal is to produce a complete module that can easily be built into existing monitoring systems, and will sell at a competitive price.
