MARGINALISED CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE

Roundabout for children in wheelchairs

Nordstjernen (the North Star) is a special residential and relief home in Struer in Denmark, for children and young people from birth to 18 years old who have special needs and/or considerable and long-term reduced functional capacity.

The mixed-age home, Nordstjernen, is supported by a volunteer association with 95 members, who contribute so that the home is financially able to help the young people develop physically, mentally and socially. The children all have disabilities, and 27% of them are wheelchair users. It is not possible for them to use public playgrounds.

“The grant from the Vissing Foundation means that we can now set up a roundabout which wheelchair users can also use. It is an opportunity for the children to play, and it stimulates them mentally, physically and socially,” says Anita Brusen, deputy chairman of the support association.

A shock-absorbent surface will be laid down, so that the children – many of whom walk unsteadily with aids or use wheelchairs – can use the area safely.
