Today, more than a billion people depend on water stored in tanks in their homes. In these tanks, the quality of stagnant water can deteriorate rapidly – even with clean water as the point of departure.
Njord Aqua is a Danish water treatment start-up from the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) and is developing a simple, robust solution to precisely this problem with the support of the Vissing Foundation among others.
“Many people are dependent on water stored in tanks, where the quality can deteriorate rapidly. We have developed a solution which keeps the entire water tank clean – with no need for filters or chemicals, and with a very low energy consumption,” says co-founder of Njord Aqua, Viktor Ryle Tamstorf.
The technology forms cleansing substances directly in the tank, and keeps the water clean – without a continual requirement of consumables. The solution only uses a small amount of electricity, equivalent to a telephone charger or a small solar panel.
Unlike many existing models, which only purify the water at one point, Njord Aqua’s technology keeps all the water in the tank clean. This makes a difference everywhere in the house – also for baths and wherever water is used daily.
At the same time, this solution is cheaper than many alternatives, and requires no maintenance.
A patent has been applied for, and the technology has already been tested in the laboratory and in practice in household tanks in Delhi in India. The company is preparing a larger pilot project, and looking into collaboration with partners in water technology, NGOs and adaptation to climate change.
