MARGINALISED CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE

Holidays, communities and new friends

“For many children the summer camp is the first time they have ever been on holiday. They can try bouncy castles, water fights, football and laser tag; they go on outings and play in UNO tournaments – but most important of all, they make new friends and feel they belong.

The six-day summer camp is organised by Danish Red Cross Youth and run by volunteers. Each year, the camp is a much-needed break with new perspectives for 60 children aged 8 to 13 who are growing up with various challenges in their daily lives.

45 young adult volunteers from across the country are responsible for the camp. They create a secure setting, plan activities, and ensure that each child is seen and enjoys warm contact.

The support of the Vissing Foundation helps to make the camp possible – from outings and special activities to those little moments that make a big difference. The children enjoy activities and experiences that they would not have otherwise, which give them memories that last far beyond the six days.

The camp will be held for the 8th time this year, and the results are unmistakable. In the evaluation of last year’s camp the children were asked what was the best thing about it. One answer came again and again: “I found a friend – I have never had a friend before.
