Hero Camps – enjoying the summer

Hero camps are an opportunity in the summer for families with children who have a chronic disease or disability – or children going through a long period of illness. The camps enable these children and their families to enjoy summer activities they will remember, taking part in groups, making friends, and, not least, getting some relief from their illness. Hero Camps are not simply an offer for the children with disabilities; they are also for parents and healthy siblings, who can take part in activities together with the child, or perhaps withdraw into the background for a while and just watch their child having fun from the sidelines.

Every Hero Camp has a three-day programme, which will vary, depending on the participants and local facilities. The programme is tailored for children and adults, and organised with a view to giving them a good experience and a foundation for new communities and networks among both children and adults.

“We started in 2022 with two Hero Camps. In 2023 we expanded to five Hero Camps, and, thanks to the support of the Vissing Foundation and others, it was possible to run as many as six camps across the country in 2024. The grant we have now received from the Vissing Foundation means we can invite even more children with chronic illness or disabilities with their families to Hero Camps in 2025,” says Henriette Madsen from the Child Accident Prevention Foundation.
