Happy holiday memories

Although everyone deserves to be part of a community and have happy memories of family holidays, more and more families with children in Denmark are facing the fact that a holiday is not possible. Red Cross arranges holiday activities, therefore, which allow families in difficult situations to have a holiday, feel community spirit and get a much-needed break from the pressures of daily life.

Red Cross gives them happy holiday memories through three types of activity: holiday camps, family camps and day-trips. In 2026, activities are being organised all over the country, where committed volunteers provide a safe setting for play, getting together and new adventures. The families are able to come out into the country, do something active together, and meet others in similar situations.

For the children, the holiday activities mean a chance to make new friends, strengthen their self confidence and develop social skills. On selected holiday stays, the adults take part in workshops, for instance in conflict resolution, handling stress, communication, and parenting skills. Here they learn specific strategies for dealing with daily challenges and strengthening family life.

“With the Vissing Foundation’s support, Red Cross can organise holiday activities for children and families going through difficult situations in life. At the same time, the activities help to form communities and improve the families’ well-being, giving them memories that may make a difference, long after the holiday is over,” says Nina Buch Hesthaven Poulsen from Red Cross.
